Building a Sustainable Business

In 2008, my family and I made a significant move to Dubai, embarking on a mission to support environmental sustainability in waste management. Driven by the realization of a gap and immense opportunities, we pioneered the First Landfill Gas to Energy Project, registering it with the UNFCCC. This project, a first in the region, garnered numerous awards, highlighting our innovative approach to sustainability. However, we faced ongoing challenges in landfill waste reduction and utilizing landfill gas for power generation.

Initial Challenges

The early days were not without obstacles. Raising awareness about sustainability was a major hurdle, as many were unaware of the environmental impact of their daily actions. In the waste sector, convincing both the public and governments to adopt eco-friendly practices required persistent efforts and innovative strategies. Finding the right partners and resources to support our initiatives was also challenging. Despite these difficulties, our determination to make a difference never wavered, and we succeeded where many would have given up.

Memorable Milestones

There are several milestones that stand out. Speaking publicly about environmental awareness is something I feel obligated to do, as simple solutions can make a significant impact. Winning the Emirates Energy Award for small-scale power generation, presented by His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, is a moment I will never forget. Additionally, having our landfill gas engine started by His Excellency Hussain Nasser Lootah marked a significant achievement, with the entire landfill site operating on power supplied by landfill gas. These milestones demonstrate what we can achieve when we work together.

Evolution and Lessons Learned

Over time, our focus on sustainability has expanded beyond landfill management to encompass a broader approach to sustainable living. We have launched educational workshops, sustainability seminars, and collaborative projects with local schools and businesses. One key lesson learned is the importance of teamwork and partnerships. Collaborating with other organizations and businesses has amplified our impact and opened new avenues. Continuous engagement and education are crucial to sustaining momentum and achieving long-term goals. Persistence in our industry is critical to achieving the lofty targets we have set.

Conclusion

Building a community of sustainable champions in the UAE has been a rewarding journey filled with opportunities, challenges, and memorable moments. It has reinforced my belief in the power of collective action and the difference we can make when united for a common cause. I am grateful for the support and dedication of everyone involved and look forward to continuing this journey towards a more sustainable future.

The growing environmental challenges we face today are interconnected problems that require collective action. This realization inspired me to create a platform where like-minded individuals could share ideas and work towards a greener future. We are grateful to institutions like MENLO College - Silicon Valley California, which bring students to learn about landfill gas to energy and the importance of persistence and passion in achieving our goals. Special thanks to Professor Dr. Mouwafac Sidaoui, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School of Business, for his support and collaboration.
